National Safety Stand-Down Week

Philadelphia Work Injury Lawyers discuss National Safety Stand-Down Week with the hopes of preventing workplace fall accidents and injuries. The sixth annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction will take place May 6 to 10. Employers may voluntarily participate in the event to help raise awareness and prevent falls in the construction industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Construction Research Training (CPWR) all offer free online resources to assist employers and employees participating in the event. Employers and employees can also share their story on social media by using #StandDown4Safety.

Injuries from Workplace Falls

When workers fall from heights such as from ladders or scaffolding, they may suffer serious, even fatal injuries. The BLS also reports that each year, 60 workers are killed and 4,500 are injured in scaffolding accidents and that 366 of the 971 construction fatalities in 2017 were attributed to falls. OSHA identifies falls as one of the “fatal four” leading causes of construction worker deaths. Aside from fatal injuries, workers may also sustain other types of injuries from falls, including:

Causes of Falls in the Workplace

Under the General Duty Clause of the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act, employers are required to provide workers with safe and healthful work environments, free from any known dangers that are likely to cause injury. However, despite both employers’ and employees’ best efforts to maintain safe workplaces, accidents and injuries still occur. According to NIOSH, falls are consistently a leading cause of death in construction. Some of the most common causes of falls in the workplace include:

  • Cluttered walkways
  • Holes in the floor
  • Inadequate training
  • Lack of fall protection
  • Worn out or malfunctioning ladders
  • Uneven/unstable working surfaces
  • Unsafely positioned ladders/scaffolding/platforms

Safety Week Topics

The National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction campaign is OSHA’s largest compliance-assistance project involving construction. This year, the topics up for discussion include preventing falls from equipment, preventing falls through skylights and holes, preventing fatal falls among workers in small businesses, and personal fall arrest systems. Participating organizations, including NIOSH and CPWR have developed infographics that may be used by employers on social media, in presentations, and as print material during Stand-Down for Safety Week. Other free online resources include hardhat stickers, hazard alert cards, training materials, fact sheets, and safety videos.

This year, NIOSH’s Aerial Lift Hazard Recognition Simulator will also be available; a training tool used to simulate workplace hazards. Millions of construction workers and employers have participated in the campaign since its launch in 2014. OSHA’s acting director of the Directorate of Construction encourages construction workers and employers throughout the state to participate in making it a success once again this year.
